Description

Set in the rusting, seedy underbelly of the once-great mega city, Port Precipice, amidst the smog and strife exists a terrified man fleeing for his life from a being that hunts him from the shadows and rooftops.

The animation was produced as the Final Year Project for my BA Computer Animation course at university. It took the best part of 4-5 months intensive work, with most of the effort going into the backgrounds. It was made as a proof of concept idea, an animated graphic novel (partly for reducing the workload, and partly because it looks damn cool!) based on the shenanigans that occur during our games of Dark Heresy.

Dark Heresy is a pencil and paper roleplaying game, much like Dungeons and Dragons, except set in the grim, dark Warhammer 40,000 universe. Between myself as the Games Master (author of the campaign, independent adjudicator and director of the story) and the other players, we create some incredible, deeply-woven stories that would have been impossible for one person to have written. It's immense fun and I fully recommend anyone remotely interested in dystopian settings, the 40k universe or roleplay games in general to give it a look in.

The premise was to see how much work went into creating this animation (conclusion: A LOT) and to see how easy it would be to carry on this as a regular feature to my portfolio and an online studio that I am part of. At the time of writing, I am storyboarding the next exciting instalment, so watch this space!

The animation was made with a combination of Photoshop, ToonBoom and After Effects. All the backgrounds were produced in Photoshop on my dinky A5 tablet (its not the size, it's what you do with it. Right, ladies?) and the characters animated in ToonBoom. Everything was then thrown together in After Effects, which I am a HUGE fan of and will continue to use more in the future!

:::Massive props go to Frazer Merrick for the incredible soundtrack. Throw me a message if you want his contact details, he's brilliant!:::

Maybe the Kroot will take him away from that decaying imperial shithole, to a pure and shiny Tau empire world, where better technology means no pollution, so there's no smog, and plenty of alien eye-candy.
